Happy Valentine's Day - Getting Ready for the Iditarod

On Valentine's Day, before our party, we learned about how mushers pack supplies to get ready for the Iditarod.  After we watched some videos and read a passage about Iditarod Drop Bags, we got to make our own.  Everyone got a labeled bag from Mrs. Beaudet with a separate checkpoint name on it.  The bags became our Valentine goody bags.

Getting Excited for Iditarod 2015!

We started talking about the Iditarod today! I shared a couple of videos and some preview information with the kids. They requested the links to the videos here on our website:

The following link is a teaser video from Iditarod Insider that was posted on their Facebook page. It gives a little bit of background information about the Iditarod:

The next video was taken during last year's Iditarod by 4-time winner Jeff King.   (Jeff would eventually lose out on his fifth win on the last night and last 25 or so miles of the 2014 1,000 mile race.)  The video footage shows (via Jeff's GoPro camera) the rough trail that the mushers faced in the first part of the Iditarod Trail during last year's race.  Lack of snow in southeast Alaska caused the rough, icy, rocky trail last year. The trail is facing similar conditions this year...and just last night the Iditarod Board of Directors voted to move the start of this year's race northward to Fairbanks.

As we watch more informational videos....I will post the links so the kids can share with families!
