Owl News - November 6

This Week  Both groups in Math finished up all the lessons in Chapter 3.  We will be reviewing on Monday and taking the Chapter 3 test on Tuesday.  We read the story of “Dona Flor” and worked on writing about family activities and traditions. We spent every morning this week practicing our songs for the concert.  In reading groups, we worked on creating our large multimedia art pieces to represent each of our concert songs.  We also traveled to the Redwood National Park and Pearl Harbor for our last stops of Paddington’s Adventure.  We ended the week with our weekly Lightning Bolts Quidditch matches and our spelling and reading tests.

Next Week  In ELA, we will read about Tall Tales.  We will take our test on Tuesday, checking our progress on adding and subtracting.  On Thursday, we will begin Chapter 4 in Math, and we will begin learning about double digit addition and subtraction.  We also venture into our first science topic of States of Matter.

Important Dates Coming Up:  Veteran’s Day on November 11 – No School.   Thanksgiving Break: November 25- November 29.

Thank You Fire Department!

Thank you to our local fire department for the great visit today!  We need to remember to go home and check our smoke detector batteries and come up with a family escape plan!

Owl News - October 8

This Week  Our short  week went by fast!  While we moved ahead nicely in Math, finishing up our Chapter 2 lesson, we did not get to our ELA story.  We decided to focus on our Owl project so we can have that ready for Open House next week.  We worked on researching our owls – we did some reading and taking notes.  We can’t wait for you to see our life size owl paintings!  We also visited Mount Rushmore with Paddington and enjoyed a visit from Franklin Fire Department to learn about fire safety.

Next Week  In ELA, we will read the story of “My Name is Yoon.”  We will finish up our Owl projects on Tuesday so they are ready for Open House on Tuesday evening.   In Math, we will review Chapter 2 and take the test on Wednesday!  Then we will start Chapter 3, which is all about basic addition and subtraction facts.  Paddington’s Adventures will bring us to the Gateway Arch in the Midwest.   Remember there is a 4 day week next week – as we have Columbus Day off on Monday.

Did you Know? Our Owl projects were based on our Reading groups?  We researched Barn owls, Screech owls, Eagle Owls, and Spotted Owls.

Owl News - October 2

This Week  We had a great week.  Our routines are running well and smoother every day.  In Math this week, we worked on place values and naming three digit numbers. In ELA, we read the story “Meet Rosina,” and worked on a story about our classroom.  With our Paddington’s Adventures, we visited the White House, the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.  We enjoyed seeing pictures of the lunar eclipse, smiled nicely for our school pictures, and had fun at another quidditch practice.  Everyone is also excited about collecting gems on our new Reading Riches necklaces.

Next Week  In ELA, we will read the story of “My Name is Yoon” and start an new journal story.   In Math, we will continue working Chapter 2 where we will have lessons on numbers up to 1,000: counting up and back by 10s and 100s, number patterns, and comparing numbers.  Paddington’s Adventures will bring us towards the Midwest to see some famous sites in the USA.  We will also start our reading groups next week and groups will start researching owls.  Remember there is a 4 day week next week – as teachers are at a workshop day on Friday, Oct. 9.
Did you Know? Every day after Math we ‘Go Noodle?’  Using the Go Noodle website, we get up out of our seats and take a brain break and do some movement to get ourselves reenergized for the next activity.
